Hon. Dame Tariana Turia

Hon. Dame Tariana Turia is a former Member of Parliament, 1996 to 2014.

She is an energetic activist, with enthusiasm, passion and determination to do whatever it takes to enable whanau wellbeing.

She is an experienced negotiator, with a depth of experience in facilitating and mediating workshops, wananga, board meetings, hui and committee proceedings. She is an accomplished conference speaker and keynote presenter. Hon Dame Tariana Turia is a respected advocate in stakeholder relationships


Awarded Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services as a Member of Parliament, 2015

  • Appointed Independent Chair of the Kawe Tutaki working group to improve conditions at Parihaka
  • Appointed Te Pou Tupua; to act as the human face of Te Awa Tupua established under the Whanganui River Treaty Settlement
  • Luther Terry Award for outstanding leadership and tobacco reform
  • Invited to be global ambassador for non-communicable diseases by World Heart Federation
  • Made a Life-member of CCS Disability Action
  • Recipient of the 2014 World Health Organisation, World No Tobacco Day Award (Western Pacific Region)
  • Honoured by Te Ora Rata o Aotearoa Maori Medical Practitioners for her commitment to Maori health, Whanau Ora, Tamariki Ora and Ora Taiao
  • Awarded 'Tu Rangatira mo te ora' award by the Public Health Association for contribution to Maori public health
  • a Pou for the North Island Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency, Te Pou Matakana;
  • a member of the Assessment Panel for the South Island Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency, Te Putahitanga o Te Waipounamu;
  • Awarded the Sir Peter Blake Medal for leadership achievement in New Zealand
